I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road Safety, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Following an illegal car meet last week in the local area of East Leeds, officers have seized a vehicle that was involved in anti-social driving during the event.
Officers continue to review evidence from the event, and further action will be taken against motorists where offences are identified, in line with the Leeds City-Wide Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) and our zero-tolerance approach for anti-social vehicle driving.
The illegal car meets often result in dangerous and disruptive behaviour including excessive speeding, loud revving of engines, burnouts, obstruction of a public highway or publicly accessible place and dangerous driving that puts members of the public and other road users at risk, along with causing significant nuisance to the surrounding local communities.
This behaviour will not be tolerated, and we want to make it clear that police and partners will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social driving as detailed in the Prohibitions section of the Vehicular Nuisance PSPO, and you can read more at: Vehicular nuisance - www.leeds.gov.uk/antisocial-behaviour-and-crime/public-spaces-protection-orders/vehicular-nuisance-pspo
Any vehicles involved in such meets and stopped by officers will be subject to thorough checks, to ensure they are roadworthy, insured, taxed, compliant with road traffic legislation and that any vehicle modifications are legal.
Drivers should also be aware that any vehicle modifications must be declared to your insurer. If modifications have not been declared, your insurance may be invalid. Where this is identified, officers will treat the vehicle as being driven without valid insurance, and it will be seized at the roadside.
We would encourage anyone attending car meets to attend legal and organised events, that are conducted in accordance with local laws, as failure to do so may result in legal enforcement action being taken, as part of our continued approach to eradicate the risks of harm, serious injury or death.
We will continue to work alongside our partner agencies and operational support teams to address the community concerns raised, ensuring other road users, pedestrians and cyclists are kept safe.
If you witness anti-social driving in your area, please report it to police via 101, or in an emergency always call 999.
